Intertwined Theming of Narrative
Narrative Cognition
There are two domains of cognition--the one called variously essence, paradigm, reason, scientific objectivity; and the other called being, narrative, meaning and subjectivity. Universal truth conditions are not established through narrative, as they are in the paradigmatic mode, but events are realistically connected across time: the story unfolds. The narrative mode leads to a multitude of varying perspectives; the paradigmatic mode, following from Plato’s essences, leads to established principles.
Paradigmic Cognition
Juxtapositions are kind of like the foils of language. Put two things next to each other, and their similarities and differences are much easier to spot. It's like when you park your '87 Toyota Camry next to that shiny new BMW in the parking lot. Oftentimes juxtaposition is used just for the sake of creating absurd situations. In ‘ The Importance of Being Earnest’, much of the comedy actually comes from that bizarre juxtaposition of characters and events.
